MT4 vs MT5 — which should you run?
3 min readUpdated July 2026
Both MetaTrader 4 and MetaTrader 5 come preinstalled on every VPS, so you can run either — or both at once. The right choice usually comes down to your broker and your Expert Advisors.
Choose MT4 if
- Your broker only offers MT4, or your account is an MT4 account.
- Your EA or indicator is written for MT4 (.ex4/.mq4) — most legacy EAs are.
- You trade mainly forex and want the largest ecosystem of ready-made tools.
Choose MT5 if
- Your broker provides an MT5 account.
- You want more timeframes, an economic calendar, and depth-of-market.
- You trade stocks, futures or other exchange-traded instruments.
- Your EA is built for MT5 (.ex5/.mq5).
EAs are not cross-compatible: an MT4 EA won't run on MT5 and vice-versa. Match your terminal to your EA's format.
